Yes, it’s a bit odd that usage of “award” in English. It sounds like you’re at a ceremony at school having written this year’s best essay. It’s not a lottery (well, shouldn’t be), but given to you ("awarded") if you satisfy the criteria for entitlement.

But in my circumstances, it does indeed feel like a proper, true, award!

I find it odd that the railway company wouldn’t let it’s workers ride free, seems an easy “fringe benefit” to give to it’s employees but then again the company don’t care now do it? in the States, i’m sorry Dumbfuckistan, that’s a Karen Cut, known to be found on certain busybodies who like to be a royal pain in the arse… squares who don’t know or abide by the unwritten rules piss me off ;)
